Childhood[]

Zoe was raised in the Caprica City suburb of Cloverdale soon after the founding of Graystone Industries.[1] As a young child, she almost perished in a fire that destroyed the house, starting from the computer room near her bedroom.[2] With the rise of Graystone Industries into a major company, the family moved into a much larger house with a lakeside view. Little else is known of her childhood other than her fondness for drawing robots.[3]

Teenage years[]

As a teenager, Zoe attended Athena Academy, a prestigious school taking in a select student body from across the Twelve Worlds. Here she became friends with Lacy Rand and Ben Stark, the latter of whom she would become romantically involved in, the three meeting up regularly in V-World, initially using exploits to visit its sex clubs. When Ben converted to Monotheism, Zoe's world view also changed, and she began to see V-World as a symbol of societal decadence, something Lacy would soon come to see it as.

Zoe also developed prodigious computing skills which rivalled her father. Having discovered her father's design proposals for a battle robot for Caprica's military was directly based on her childhood drawings, she believed she could one-up him. Rather than design a better chassis, however, she decided it was more practical to design a more sophisticated AI that would make it more intelligent than any other robot. Coming up with a program that could digitally recreate a person's consciousness in V-World based on information obtained through data-scavenging a subject's entire digital existence. Zoe used herself as the template, creating "Zoe-A".[3]

As Zoe became more involved in the Monotheistic faith, she told Sister Clarice Willow about Zoe-A at the school. Sister Willow, the commander of the STO operation on Caprica, considered Zoe to be a messianic figure, chosen by the One True God to bless humanity with her computer program, seeing it as saving souls from death. On her urging, Zoe began making plans to run away from home and head to Gemenon, where she intended to show the program to the church elders. Ben and Lacy also liked the idea of running away, and agreed to come with her. On the day of their departure, however, Lacy changed her mind at the last minute and stayed behind. Ben, also having a change of heart, revealed he was wearing a suicide vest, having been radicalised by a dissident STO cell. Ben, Zoe and dozens others were killed in the explosion.[4]
