Zephyr was a Intersun Liners luxury liner which escaped the Fall of the Twelve Colonies in a ragtag fleet led by Galactica. Zephyr was the largest civilian ship that survived and a ship with the largest number of survivors, including the Galactica and Pegasus.
History[]
Surviving the initial Cylon attack, the Zephyr rendezvous with Roslin's Fleet in deep space, from where it jumps alongside every FTL capable ship to Ragnar Anchorage, to link up with the Galactica, and under its cover departed for deep space with rest of the surviving ships, forming the ragtag fleet.
Several weeks later, following President Laura Roslin's arrest during the military coup, the Quorum of Twelve took a shuttle from Zephyr to Galactica. in the hope of questioning her and restoring her presidential authority. Later, during the presidential elections, Zephyr was one of the last five ships in the fleet to dispatch her ballot results to the Galactica counting room. Petty Officer Dualla intercepted the Zephyr's ballots and replaced them with forged ones in an attempt to swing the election in Roslin's favor.
After the decision by Colonial Government to settle New Caprica, the Zephyr stays in orbit with number of ships, presumably unable to land due to its complex and un-aerodynamic design. It escapes alongside Galactica, Pegasus and rest of the civilians ship that were unable to land, when Cylons surprisingly show up one year later.
During the Battle of the Ionian Nebula, the Zephyr suffered severe damage to the wheel section when it was struck by a conventional Cylon missile. For several weeks, the ring of the ship was covered in scaffolding with Prometheus nearby to help with the repairs.
The Zephyr is mentioned again, when days after finding Earth, Lt. Gaeta is on his way to it, after being ordered to take some Rest and Relaxation time off duty. Weeks later, all of remaining Zephyrs passengers and crew were successfully offloaded on Earth, and the vessel itself is guided by Samuel T. Anders into Sol.[2]
Behind the Scenes[]
- For 3rd season of Battlestar Galactica 2004, the 3D was updated by Pierre Drolet, increasing the ships details.
- Zephyr might be the oldest ship ever seen in Battlestar Galactica 2004s Universe, possibly predating even 1st Cylon War. A now Defunct SciFi Channel's website described the rotating ring section was from the time where artificial gravity for commercial vessels were not yet economically feasible.
- The ring section is a relic of a bygone era when artificial gravity was not yet commercially viable.
- For the 3rd Season, the 3D model was redesigned by Pierre Drolet.
- Defunct SciFi Channel's website refers to ship as "Space Park"
- Zephyr lends its name to Zephyrus, a god from Greek mythology.
- Zephyr was the only civilian ship to be visually shown as being repaired after receiving damage.
