This is a timeline of the Battlestar Galactica universe, a chronological record of events relevant to the story and lore. This timeline uses dates in terms of years before the Cylon Holocaust. After the Cylon Holocaust, an out-of-universe dating system centered around the Fall of the Twelve Colonies marking the beginning of Year 0. The events are sorted in chronological order, from the beginning of the universe.
Two different in-universe calendars can also be observed:
- Official calendar of the United Colonies of Kobol, with the Cylon holocaust falling on the year 21355.[1]
- Official calendar of the planet Caprica, with the Cylon holocaust falling on the year 2000.[2]
Ancient History[]

- Language of Proto-Kobolese develops on Kobol, forming the basis for later Kobolese languages spoken by various Colonies.[2]

- An explosion of supernova creates the Ionian Nebula

- Humanity on Kobol develops spaceflight technology, and ultimately a race of cybernetic beings; the precursors of the Thirteenth Tribe.

- The Thirteenth Tribe leaves Kobol. Along its journey, stopping on the Algae planet and erecting the Temple of Hopes.[4]

- The Thirteenth Tribe, continuing on its journey toward Earth, leaves a navigation beacon in the Lion's Head Nebula.[5]

- Pythia records the journey of the Thirteenth Tribe, its landfall on Earth, the prophecies of things to come, including the exile of the human race, and the prophecy of the dying leader.

- An unknown Thirteenth Tribesman returns to Kobol, carrying with him the Scripts of Pythia, and information about Earth, including the map of the night sky.[6]
- c. 4,000 to 2,000 BCH
- The Thirteenth Tribe strive on Earth to discontinue the use of organic memory transfer, hoping to reproduce sexually instead.
- The Thirteenth Tribe, in their hubris, create their own race of mechanical servants; the Cylons.
- For unknown reasons, social unrest and conflict arise between the Twelve Tribes and Lords of Kobol.
- c. 2,000 BCH
- Samuel Anders, Tory Foster, Ellen Tigh, Saul Tigh and Galen Tyrol are born on Earth, and eventually work together to re-invent the organic memory transfer technology.
- The Cylons of the Thirteenth Tribe rebel, unleashing a nuclear holocaust that decimates Earth, and kills all but 5 members of the Thirteenth Tribe. These 5 survivors, later known as "The Final Five", are saved by the newly re-discovered organic memory transfer, and are resurrected on a spaceship, in orbit of Earth.
- The Final Five decide to travel by sublight speed to Kobol, to warn their brothers to not construct robotic servants, thus beginning their 2000-year-long journey.
- Social unrest on Kobol cumulates in the death of the Lord of Kobol Athena, and the construction of a massive spaceship the Galleon.
- The Twelve Tribes of Kobol depart the planet and vowed to never return.
- c. 2,000 to 1,942 BCH
- While traveling through deep space an unknown disaster strikes the Galleon, on the outskirts of the Cyrannus Star System. Most of the technology enabling space travel, the history of Kobol, and much more is lost.

- The Tauron Civil War begins. Orphaned Yoseef Adama migrates to Caprica with his brother, and starts a family there.

- The Tauron Civil War ends.
- c. 82 BCH
- After much negotiation, Virgon the last planet still in possesion of nuclear weapons agrees to its disarmament. The leaders of the Twelve Colonies promising that peace would reign in their lifetime, and the lifetime of their children.

- Vipers Mk. I enter service.[8]
- Valkyrie-class battlestars enter service in both Caprican and Gemenon Navies.[9][10]

- The Soldiers of the One take part in a terror campaign on Caprica.

- Work begins on Apollo University's Zoe Graystone Computer Science Wing.[11]

- The events of "Caprica" take place.
- On Caprica, William Adama is born to Joseph (Yoseef) Adama and partner Evelyn.
- 52 BCH
- The Cylon War begins.
- 51 BCH
- Articles of Colonization are signed, forming United Colonies of Kobol and the Colonial Fleet.
- Colonal Fleet HQ is established on Picon.
- Colonial ship Brenik is lost in battle with the Cylon.
- c. 51 to c. 49 BCH
- Battlestar Galactica enters service, alongside three other Jupiter-class battlestars.
- 49 BCH
- Colonial Fleet HQ is destroyed by Cylon attack, and Admiral Lucinda Cain takes over as the Admiral of the Fleet, placing her flag on the mobile shipyard Daidalos.[8]
- Battlestar Athena is delivered to its sponsor world of Picon.[8]
- Vipers Mk. II enter service[8]

- Silas Nash is given command of the Battlestar Galactica.
- Daidalos is abandoned in upper levels of the gas giant Ragnar. Later to be refitted into Ragnar Anchorage.
- Vipers Mk. III enter service.
- Pallas is besieged by the Cylon, causing tens of thousands of civilian casualties.
- 43 BCH
- Year long armistice is signed between the Cylon and the planets of Helios Beta, Gamaa and Delta. Colonial Fleet is disbanded and Articles of Colonization suspended. Helios Alpha is left to fend of Cylon attacks alone.
- 43 BCH
- The Galleon is discovered by the Cylons on the outskirts of the Cyrannus Star System. It is later destroyed by Battlestar Galactica to deny the Cylons.
- 42 BCH
- William Adama is assigned as a raptor, later viper pilot to Battlestar Galactica.
- The events of movie "Blood and Chrome" take place.
- Battlestar Archeron is destoyed by Cylon forces.
- Colonial Fleet begins its Ghost Fleet Offensive.
- 40 BCH
- Battlestar Galactica and Battlestar Columbia link up, to participate in the Operation Raptor Talon, resulting in Columbia's destruction.[12]
- The Cylon War comes to a close with the Cimtar Peace Accords.[12] William Adama is mustered out of service.[1]
- Armistice Station is constructed by the United Colonies of Kobol.[13]
- 37 BCH
- William Adama begins serving as a deckhand in the merchant fleet, aboard an inter-colony freighter.[1]
- 28 BCH
- William Adama meets Saul Tigh
- 23 BCH
- Thanks to his wifes political connections, William Adama is reinstated the Colonial Fleet[14] with a rank of Captain, and is assigned to the Battlestar Universal.[15]
- 17 BCH
- Captain Adama is promoted to the rank of Major and reassigned to the Battlestar Atlantia.[1]
- 13 BCH
- Major Adama is promoted to the rank of Colonel and reassigned to the Battlestar Columbia.
- 9 BCH
- Colonel Adama is promoted to the rank of Commander and reassigned to the Battlestar Valkyrie.[1]
- 6 BCH
- Battlestar Valkyrie is dispatched on black-ops mission, sparking the The Stealthstar Incident. Following the missions failure, Commander Adama is reassigned to the Battlestar Galactica.[1]

- Battlestar Chronos is sent by the Admiralty to investigate a faint emergency transmission near the armistice line, leading to the Destruction of the Battlestar Chronos.[16]

- The Fall of the Twelve Colonies takes place on the fortieth anniversary of the Armistice. Galactica leads a refugee fleet out of the Cyrannus Star System in search of Earth.
