2004 Continuity

The Fleet sometimes also called "refugee fleet" or "the ragtag fleet", was a caravan of ships carrying refugees from the Cyrannus Star System after the Fall of the Twelve Colonies. The Fleet was formed by President Laura Roslin out of civilian ships near Caprica, and soon after saw the addition of the Battlestar Galactica at Ragnar. Over the next four years, The Fleet traveled through space in search of Earth, the mythological thirteenth colony settled on by the people of Kobol. When Earth was found to be inhospitable, The Fleet settled on another planet nearby, and the ships were flown into its sun to mark the abandonment of technology and a new beginning.

Fleet Population[]

Before it departed from space around Caprica, the fleet of survivors gathered around two dozen sub-FTL ships. Some 75 ships gathered under the leadership of President Laura Roslin, amassing over 50,000 souls on board. Before the fleet could transfer all passengers from sublight ships, the Fleet was found by a Cylon raider, who immediately alerted the Cylons to the gathering fleet. To avoid a potential decapitation strike by the Cylons, the sublight ships were left behind, just as the Cylons jumped into DRADIS range, with the FTL-capable ships rendezvousing with the Battlestar Galactica at Ragnar Anchorage.

Little under 50,000 people left the Cyrannus System in search of Earth. Over the next four years, a further 10,000 people would perish, either due to Cylon attacks, suicide, environmental damage, or sickness. The following graph shows the decline in population throughout the series:

Ships[]

The Fleet consists of dozens of ships, with the exact count being impossible to determine. In the Miniseries, Night 2, the entire fleet consists of "More than 50 ships + Galactica herself). By episode 33 the count was refined to 64, but by episode The Farm, 24 ships consisted "almost 1/3 of the fleet", meaning the fleet would have to consist at least of at least 72 ships. By Season 2, the ship count steadily decreased, going as low as 35 ships in episode Blood On The Scales. We only hear vessels being lost in a handful of episodes, meaning most ships were destroyed or scuttled offscreen. Considering the timeline, a boat was damaged or scuttled on average, give or take, every two weeks.

Considering there is no on-screen evidence of ships being destroyed every couple of weeks, it's reasonable to presume that the bulk of the losses was in huge chunks rather than spread out through the 4-year journey. The most likely candidates for such losses would be Exodus for New Caprica and the Nebula Passage.
