Terry Carter (born 16 December 1928 in Brooklyn, died 23 April 2024[1]) was an American actor known for playing the recurring character, "Colonel Tigh" in the 1978 Battlestar Galactica 1978 series.

Career[]

Carter made his Broadway debut playing opposite Ertha Kitt in the acclaimed Mrs. Patterson. After the play ended it's successful run, he was in the lead role in the musical Kwamina, co-starring Sally Ann Howes. In the 1950s he became familiar to television audiences as one of Phil Silvers' sidekicks on the popular comedy series Sgt. Bilko.

In the mid 1960s he vecame New England's first black newscaster on WBZ-TV in Boston. After several years with the station, he left television to star in European films, staying in Europe for two years, acting and writing screenplays, one of which was made into a Danish film.

Aglow with success, he returned to Hollywood to star as Dennis Weaver's sidekick in the popular 1970's series McCloud, which was produced by Glen A. Larson. When the series ended it's seven year run in 1977, Larson offered Carter the part of Colonel Tigh on Battlestar Galactica.[2]

Trivia[]

Originally cast as Lieutenant Boomer, Carter fractured his leg in a skating accident, and was forced to initially wear a bulky cast. STill in a partial cast when filming started on the pilot, Carter's cast was covered with a knee length boot and black velvet cloth.[3]
