Terra is a planet which was colonised by an offshoot of the Thirteenth Tribe, the others of which settled on Earth. The two cultures were therefore linguistically related, using terms such as "kilometres" which those from the Twelve Colonies of Man did not. "Terra" itself was a Gemonese word meaning "Earth".[1]
History[]
Following the Thirteenth Tribe's settling on Terra, the society went through a technological dark age and they were forced to rebuild. Over time, they developed rivalling states on the planet, with their own cultures and, by the name of the "Royal Theatre", some were monarchical in nature. These eventually united together as they began colonising other worlds in more and more advanced space craft. In need to expand their resource-gathering capabilities, the colonising governments were willing to plant colonies on planets of very different atmosphere's to their own, with some planets like Lunar Seven and Paradeen being so low in density colonists born there had no chance of surviving on Terra.[1]
By the start of the Seventh Millennium, Terra's political system had developed to the point there were two competing colonial superpowers occupying the planet - the Western Nationalists and the Eastern Alliance. Conflict began between the two, focused on the colonies with state-sanctioned privateer forces stealing resources.[1] This escalated over time, with the Eastern Alliance using advanced weaponry to wipe out cities to facilitate their own colonization. All out nuclear war between the two rival states was prevented with the arrival of Galactica, a battlestar from the Twelve Colonies of Man.[2]
Trivia[]
