Retribution is an episode of the 2009 TV series Caprica.

Plot[]

Teaser[]

It is 11:30pm at Caprica City's Trojan Interplanetary Spaceport. New Colonial Flight 308 to Gemenon is ready to take off. STO members Lacy Rand, Pann and his girlfriend Hippolyta are continuing Barnabas Greeley's unsanctioned bombing campaigns, with the spaceport as their next attack. All three spread out and begin planting their bombs. Lacy is nervous and while she plans to hide a bomb under a seat, a nearby cleaner keeps her from doing her job. Soon after, a security guard asks her if she is OK. Lacy bluffs that she and her friends from temple missed their shuttle to Picon and are waiting for the next flight, but he is not fooled. He demands to check her backpack. Before he can find the bomb, he is shot by Pann. With the operation in jeopardy, they run out ot the building from armed guards and into Keon's getaway car. They are angry over the failure, but Hippolyta wants to just detonate the bombs immediately to save it. When Pann finds that Lacy's bomb is still with her, he throws it out of the car.

Act 1[]

At 12:02AM, Pann and Hippolyta are irritated that the bombing has now failed, with Hippolyta understanding that without the detonations a lot of evidence will survive to identify them, with the bombs themselves having their fingerprints on. Pann asks why they even brought Lacy along as she has never shown competence to their cause. She becomes angry and gets out of the car.

Daniel Graystone has invited Cornell, a board member, to his house to meet with himself and Cyrus Xander. He demands to know why he sent Sam Adama to his door to bring him, which frightened his wife Helen and their children. Cornell should not even be in the house, as when the board voted him out of the company they banned having direct contact. Joseph Adama forces him to sit down, and begins talking about his addiction to drugs. He has been clean for three years, having come to realise he must protect his family. Cornell won't budge on the offer to vote at board meeting Daniel has planned to see him return, so Daniel reminds him of the young women he hurt during this dark time in his life that Daniel had to pay off to keep the company out of trouble. He finally hints at revealing all this to Helen, risking his entire family life, if he does not support him. He refuses to be party any longer to this act of blackmail and leaves.

At 1:18am, Amanda is in the shower. She thinks back to her time in the hospital after her suicide attempt. Sister Clarice bluffs that she only heard about the incident from the news, and is in contact with Daniel who is stuck in traffic. She doesn't want to see him.

At the Graystone residence, Daniel looks for the next person on the board to blackmail. This time it is Lillian Tellar, an 11-year company director from an Old Money family. Finding evidence to blackmail hear was easy, and the Ha'la'tha now has photographs of her tied up to a bed at a brothel. The next person is Vidal Corso, who is a frequent drunk driver. Joseph offers to either blackmail him with his existing convictions, or set up a fake police stop to catch him in the act. The next is Terry Albick, but Daniel is reluctant to look further. These people have been part of his life for many years, and they have each attended birthdays for family members, weddings and shared vacations. He is reminded that the entire board supported the Vergis buyout offer, so they are all sellouts. Joseph continues to read instead, saying they have found nothing bad on Albick yet; Daniel decides to tell them that Albick has been sleeping with his sister-in-law for six years, and how there's a good chance his nephew is a secret love-child due to how proud he is of the boy. Daniel takes a drink and they move on to the next set of people.

In a dream, Amanda eats a meal with Zoe. Zoe doesn't want to eat her vegetarian meal, commenting that it takes like vomit. When asked why she hates everything, she tells her that she must just hate Amanda, but tells her she will be dead soon and they'll both be happy, echoing the last words she said to her. Amanda wakes up from this nightmare. Getting out of bed with the use of a walking stick, she gets out a glass to have some water. Noticing Sister Clarice laying on a bed nearby while on the Holoband, she walks up to her. When Clarice mutters the name, 'Zoe', she leaves.

In V-World, Sister Clarice is talking with the STO leadership, who talks only through a distorted voice rather than replicas of their own. The voice warns her that Barnabas has been successful in turning the Monotheist children she nurtured, particularly Clarice, Pann and Hippolyta. She wants to know how they got this information, and is told a highly placed agent in the GDD has this information. The children were caught on camera at the spaceport four hours ago, and warns her they will inevitably try to kill her again. She struggles to sleep after her meeting.

Cornell sits in his car, thinking about the blackmail. He takes off his wedding ring and places it within a letter addressed to Helen, then shoots himself.

Act 2[]

It is 4:46AM. Pann watches TV news while in the bath. While one news channel reports on Cornell's suicide, another discusses the botched bombing attempt on the spaceport, and how no one has claimed responsibility. He hears someone moving nearby, and is confronted by Sister Clarice, armed with a gun. She wants to know why he turned his back on her, and he explains that he was moved by Barnabas' offer of a better way. He begs her forgiveness, and she puts the gun down. She warns him God is who she should be begging for forgiveness, and pushes the TV into the bathtub, killing him.

At 6:08AM, Hippolyta returns home in the rain. She is stopped by Sister Clarice, and she realises she knows about the betrayal. Hippolyta tries to run away, but is pushed over by Olaf. Elsewhere, Lacy is on the phone with Barnabas asking for a meeting. He had invited Pann and Hippolyta to a meeting, but they failed to answer, so he has to find out from her why the bombing failed. She blames the failure on Barnabas for leading the four to believe it would be empty, so she did not expect to be spotted by security. He suspects she is covering up for her failures, and reminds he she hesitated to blow up Sister Clarice's car. Lacy says that was because the act was reckless and goes against their mission to convert others. Barnabas turns the conversation back to Pann and Hippolyta's absence. They are loyal, yet absent, and he wonders if Lacy is a mole for Clarice. He demands her loyalty one final time; she responds she is committed to God.

Act 3[]

At 9:15AM, Daniel is being driven down the road. He is stopped by Helen, who tries to get inside. She knows he knows something about his death, and accuses him of murder.

In a flashback, Daniel sees Amanda at the hospital. She asks him if he was responsible for the two deaths when stealing MCP. He says he didn't know that would happen, but she sees he is passing the blame, and that he should have known it could happen when hiring thugs. Daniel slips up and implies it is no different from Amanda's parenting style to Zoe, leading to an argument.

At 10:26AM, Agent Duram and the GDD have arrived at Pann's house to find him dead, and reports indicate his girlfriend Hippolyta is also dead. He notes both children were students of the same school as Ben Starnk and Zoe Graystone, and plans to call Sister Clarice later. During his driving, he spots Clarice walking past and heads out to confront her. He asks her is she knew they were Monotheists, having recently 'learned' she died. He asks if she ever associated with Monotheism, perhaps during a crisis of faith, but she refuses.

Cyrus Xander has the crate containing the U-87 prototype delivered to Daniel. He asks if Amanda is OK, but he says she is still struggling, and leaves. Daniel looks down at the U-87, and sees only Zoe.

Agent Duram and Singh discuss recent developments. Clarice's lawyer has filed a legal complaint to the GDD for harassment. Duram is adamant Clarice is covering for her students in a misguided sense of protection, and this is getting in the way of investigating the school. Singh insists he look elsewhere, as they have nothing on her.

Act 4[]

In his car, Duram looks back at his casework, and drives out to meet Amanda. He warns her she thinks Clarice is actively involved in the terrorist activities. Evidence indicates she was raised on Gemenon at the same time the STO was expanding its membership, and there was a high-level meeting at the same time Clarice was on Gemenon. Having phoned Athena Academy itself, he has found Clarice took vacation time to go to Gemenon, so could not have been going to a teaching conference like she told Amanda. He insists Clarice was actively recruiting students into the STO through brainwashing, including Zoe. He asks her to be a Confidential Informant for Clarice so the GDD can get information on her. Returning to the cabin, Amanda thinks about what Duram said, and realises Clarice spoke of God before and talked a lot about Zoe a lot, including last night.

At the Graystone residence, Amanda returns to find the house empty. She takes a gun out of a safe.

Act 5[]

At 7:18PM, Barnabas has become aware of the recent killings, and discusses new tactics with Keon and Lacy in an unfinished building. Keon has had enough of Barnabas and abandons the bomb he is making, heading to the elevator door. Barnabas warns him that if he leaves, he will be found, killed and he and Lacy killed next. He calls Barnabas insane, and is shot through the neck as he tries to leave. The elevator door opens immediately after, with Clarice and Olaf heading out. Olaf grabs Lacy, as Clarice straps Barnabas to the bomb as it is armed, telling him is death is necessary as a warning to others. He declares her Apotheosis program a fraud. Clarice, Olaf and Lacy get in a car as the bomb is set off. Lacy asks if she will be killed next, but Clarice hopes she won't have to.

At 12:26AM, Amanda returns to the cabin in a taxi, where Clarice has already returned. Clarice is under the weather, and tells her two of her students were killed. Asked who would do such a thing, she says they were running with a bad crowd, reminding Amanda of what happened to Zoe. In a reversal of their roles, Clarice is crying and confides in Amanda as the only person she can talk to.

Production[]

Writing[]

After leaving the revelation of Amanda's survival until the very end of Unvanquished, much of this episode included flashbacks to explain how she not only survived her suicide attempt, but found her way to Clarice's cabin.

Directing[]

The car chase sequence was done in the style of Blade Runner, with the director wanting rain to be a consistent element in the episode.[1]

Deleted scenes[]

  • Daniel and Xander open up the boxed U-87, which Tomas believes has been melted down. Daniel talks about his estranged wife as Xander leaves.
  • Out in the rain, Sister Clarice walks into Amanda, where they go into a cafe for drinks. Agent Duram watches.
  • Sister Clarice meets with Olaf, where she orders him to warn Nestor and the others to watch their backs as the home is now liable to investigation by the GDD. Clarice is disturbed by having to kill Pann and Hippolyta, but Olaf tries to keep her alert as they have yet to kill Barnabas. The two argue over her recent hiding at the cabin, and Olaf implies she is interpreting God's message however she wants it.
