Battlestar Galactica 2004, Caprica and Blood & Chrome

Prometheus was a civilian cargo ship which survived the Fall of the Twelve Colonies and joined the Galactica-led ragtag fleet. Shortly before colonization of New Caprica, the Prometheus served as fleets black market hub, where all kinds of illicit goods could be bartered, sold or bought.

History[]

Escaping the Cyrannus Star System in a refugee fleet led by Colonial One and Galactica, Prometheus developed an "open port" policy that made it home to black marketeering. Following the murder of Pegasus' commanding officer, Commander Jack Fisk, the Colonial Fleet adopted a tighter policy on marketing, and while Prometheus was allowed to continue its service its sellers were threatened with severe punishment if murders; price-gauging of medicines and child prostitution continued.[3] Later, after surviving the Passage, the ship landed on the Algae Planet, assisting with the transportation of food and other obtained supplies. Shortly after it took off from the surface, it executed FTL jump to emergency standby coordinates, while Galactica held the position until all planet-based personal was successfully evacuated.[4]

Ultimately, the ship survived the entire exodus, being scuttled in the Sol by Samuel T. Anders.[1]

Behind the Scenes[]

  • Fabio Passaro noted "The Prometheus made its first appearance in the Season 2 episode "Black Market". The original Artist made a nicely detailed hero model for that episode and it served it purpose excellently. As time went on though the VFX staff wanted to include it in more fresh fleet shots and this called for an optimised version and the other LOD versions as putting the unadulterated Hero mesh in fleet filler shots was proving too prohibitive when it came to CPU overheads. As before the Hero mesh was optimised from the original 1.8 Million polygons down to approx 1.3 or so..and then a Medium detailed version was created. The low detail version once more proved to be the most work as it still had to look like the original and there was a lot of industrial detailing inside this ship that needed to be emulated. Altogether - from 1 single mesh - 12 variants were made in total with special versions for specific render passes for compositing."

  • The original 3D hero model was made by Alain Rivard, with further modification done by Fabio Passaro.[5]
