The Meta-Cognitive Processor (MCP) is a type of next-generation computer processor developed for military robots. The purpose of MCP was to allow military robots artificial self-awareness and adaptability to conditions.

History[]

Work on MCP began sometime around 1937, when the Caprican military awarded the U-87 contract to Graystone Industries, which was expected to construct as many as ten thousand fully-operational military robots. Though several prototype robot chassis were successfully produced, the MCP R&D team failed to create a truly ground-breaking device. Between 1937 and 1942, rival enterprise Vergis Corp also began their own MCP initiative in the belief the contract would be moved to them if Graystone Industries' MCP failed to materialise. Both companies' MCP projects failed in their goal.

Hoping to win the contract anyway, Vergis Corp spread rumours of their success in creating the MCP, which got the attention of the Caprican defence department. This prompted the theft of Vergis' MCP by Daniel Graystone through the Ha'la'tha. When installed with the Zoe-A software and planted into a U-87 prototype, the original processor malfunctioned. Though it successfully created a self-aware robot as planned, it could not be replicated. Copied MCP processors created dumb robots, and other prototypes with the original MCP in would perform as dismal. Over several weeks, both Dr. Daniel Graystone and his assistant Philomon hypothesised on how it could be possible. The initial hypothesis was that the processor somehow offloaded certain functions to the chassis, and later that the processor malfunctioned and began processing analog.
