Battlestar Galactica 1978 and Galactica 1980
Galactica was a Colonial Battlestar. Following the destruction of the Twelve Colonies of Man, it led a rag-tag fugitive fleet on the intergalactic search for Earth.
History[]
Galactica entered service near the midway point of the 1000 Yahren War, and went on to serve over 500 yahrens defending the Twelve Colonies of Man from the Cylon Alliance, a dictatorial super-block led by the Cylon Empire. Little is known of Galactica in the years leading up to the Battle of Cimtar, though it is known to have undergone a refit at least a century before the battle. This refit saw the abandoning of its celestial chambers, when improvements in navigation computing made the need for astronomers to verify their position superfluous.[1]
In the final years of the war, the Twelve Colonies faced a number of defeats, reducing its military capabilities. When the Cylons spontaneously sued for an armistice, Galactica was one of five ships remaining, under the control of Commander Adama, himself a member of the Quorum of Twelve.[2] Under orders from President Adar, on the advice of the human-Cylon liaison, Count Baltar, Galactica and the others rallied to Cimtar to await the delegation. It was discovered too late to be a trap to not only catch the fleet off guard, but to attack the colonies while unprotected. Galactica survived the battle, though only by abandoning the fleet to its fate and returning afterwards to pick up stranded pilots. After a second journey to Caprica, Galactica led a fleet of civilian refugees out from their star system and headed into deep space.[2]
