Earth, as seen from space.
Earth was a planet colonised by the thirteenth tribe of Kobol when the humans' homeworld was abandoned. While knowledge of them settling on a planet of this name was known to the people that eventually made-up the Twelve Colonies of Man, information of its exact location or the other colonies founded by the Thirteenth Tribe were lost to time (along with the knowledge of how the Twelve Colonies became aware of Earth in the first place).
Unlike Terra and its own respective colonies, those of the Thirteenth Tribe who settled on Earth lost their advanced technology and had to redevelop from scratch. Some years following a Cylon attack on the Twelve Colonies, refugees made their way to Earth, finding it to be in a state of cold warfare with limited space technology. Fearing the Cylons will easily destroy such an undefended world, the fleet continued past the planet, but sent child refugees to the planet to settle in safety.[1]
