The Reimagined Series
(Battlestar Galactica 2004, Caprica and Blood & Chrome)

The Scorpion Fleet Shipyards were a series of non-connected orbital complexes over the planet Scorpia in an older dialect known as Scorpion. Each complex could house multiple battlestars, and dozens of support crafts, ranging from resupply ships, and tugs to fully-fledged pocket carriers[2].

History[]

First Cylon War[]

Scorpion Shipyards, was a space installation in orbit of Scorpia built some time before the start of 1st Cylon War. The shipyard was divided into two main parts: a static orbital shipyard complex, and a mobile shipyard Daidalos, under the command of Rear Admiral Lucinda Cain. After the Colonial Fleet Headquarters on Picon was destroyed in the first year of the war, Rear Admiral Cain detached the mobile shipyard and assumed command of the entire Colonial Fleet.

After Daidalos' departure, the situation at Scorpion Shipyards became more dire than ever before. Under pressure from the Colonial Fleet to finish the development of Viper Mk II, the shipyard requested assistance from Daidalos and its fleet group[3].

The interwar period[]

In the 40-year-long interwar period, the Scorpion Shipyards, being fully transferred to the Colonial Fleet, were renamed Scorpion Fleet Shipyards and significantly expanded. From a single installation, unable to accommodate the newly built Jupiter-class battlestars, to 4 separate complexes in close proximity of each other with the ability accommodate the larger post-war Mercury-class.

Fall of the Twelve Colonies[]

By the 40th anniversary of the 1st Cylon War's conclusion, the shipyards grew to be one of the most important Colonial installations. When Cylons launched their unprecedented offensive, the shipyards became one of the most important military targets in the Cyrannus Star System. When the first wave of nuclear-armed Cylon raiders jumped in, they took the Colonial Navy by complete surprise. Multiple nuclear hits on the battlestar row caused significant damage to Battlestar Pegasus and completely jammed DRADIS on any and all moored ships.

The shipyard itself, took at least 3 direct hits from nuclear weapons, causing 5 ships, including two battlestars, to be instantly vaporized. With DRADIS down on both sides the second wave switched to conventional armament, and exploiting a weakness in Valkyrie-class design, destroyed multiple other vessels. With significant DRADIS interference from nuclear detonation, the Cylons were however unable to detect that Battlestar Pegasus was only damaged, not destroyed. When Cylons realized their mistake, the Pegasus was already exiting battlestar row and spooling its FTL drive. The nearest nuclear-armed raider fired two additional nuclear missiles, but Pegasus managed to execute a blind FTL jump seconds before detonation, causing significant damage to Complex A[2].

Design[]

Scorpion Fleet Shipyards was composed of at least 3 distinctive complexes, A, B, C, and D[4]. While not individually connected, they maintained close distance on relatively same orbital vector around Scorpion.

Complex A[]

ComplexA Layout

Layout of Complex A[4]

Complex A could house at least 26 ships, of 10 were battlestar, 3 of them in battlestar row, and one in a dry dock. In addition to docking space, being over 9km long, the Complex A encompassed numerous drydocks, fuel tanks, and fleet refueling dock, all connected by a complex-spanning rail network, allowing quick transport of goods and personnel across the shipyard. Complex A housed the following facilities:

  • Tylium Pumping Island
  • Battlestar Row (3 Berths)
  • Battlestar Refit Drydock (1 Berth)
  • Carrier Fueling Tanks
  • Carrier and Fleet Defense Resupply Docks (3 Berths)
  • Military Logistics & Fuel Distribution Center (3 Berths)
  • Fleet Refueling Docks (8 Berths)
  • Fleet Berth (7 Berths)
  • Fleet Refit Drydocks (3 Berths, able to double stack for up to 6 ships)

Complex B[]

Complex B appears to be significantly smaller, around 2.8km in length. Correspondingly, it is shown to house only 4 battlestars. From what little is shown, in addition to berths for aforementioned ships, it also has one Battlestar Refit Drydock in a similar configuration as Complex A[5].

Complex C[]

While larger than Complex B, during the Fall of Scorpion Fleet Shipyards, it appears to be sparsely used. During the fall only three battlestars appear to be docked there, One Jupiter-class and two Valkyrie-class.

Complex D[]

The smallest of all four Complexes, Complex D appears to focus on refueling. It sports four berths for Fleet Escort ships or pocket carriers and most of the surface is taken by huge tylium tanks[2].
