Delphi was a freighter which escaped the Cylon attack on the Twelve Colonies of Man and formed part of a civilian fleet led by Galactica. The ship was used predominantly as a place of education, and could carry a large number of children. Following the discovery of Earth and the fleet's departure from it, Delphi was sent back to land its children on the planet to keep them safe from the Cylons. During its journey back to Earth, it experienced engine trouble and got the attention of a Cylon patrol. A Viper squadron destroyed the attackers, but Delphi suffered serious damage and exploded seconds after its shuttles evacuated.[1]
