Battlestar Galactica 1978 Continuity
(Battlestar Galactica 1978 and Galactica 1980)

The Centurions were a mass-produced race of mechanical beings, originally created by the Cylons.

History[]

The Centurions had their origins possibly in the fourth or fifth millennium. The Cylon Empire became aware and intrigued by humanity, which had colonised many planets near their territory. Recognising their body design as very practical, they designed their military robots, the Centurions, based on that design.[1][excerpt 1] Following the overthrow of the Cylons by their creations, the Centurions made up the bulk of the military under the reconstituted empire led by the Imperious Leader, commanding Raiders and leading ground forces. There was also a variant known as the Command Centurion, which was gold in color rather than chrome.

Design[]

While built to mimic humans, Centurions were designed to be taller and physically stronger, and with the ability to replace damaged body parts one unit could last forever. With better processors than the human brain, they could think faster. However, this was limited by their identical programming; with a lack of individuality, creative strategies my their enemies had greater chance of success.

Further notes[]

The Centurions were used as the basis for the Cylon War-era Centurions, "Model 0005", in the 2004 Battlestar Galactica series.

  1. Excerpt from "Saga of a Star World":
    "Why did we make them?

We didn’t. Another race did, a race of reptiles called Cylons. After a while, the Cylons discovered humans were the most practical form of creature in this system, so they copied our bodies. But they built them bigger and stronger than we are. And they can exchange parts so they can live for ever.
