Synopsis[]
"The Adama Gambit part one"[]
Adama has ordered the fleet to move out of the Storm Zone at Maximum drive, with the Galactica leading the way. Adama is concerned about his own behaviour during the events in the Quantum Storm Zone. On the way to the bridge, he decides to correct himself as he feels responsible for what happened. On the bridge, Colonel Tigh proposes a new destination: a star cluster he has located that they can reach in leass than a secton. Athena reports a status report from the Ariadna. It has suffered drive failure and is falling behind again. Tigh doesn't want to lose the ship, so Adama orders the fleet to a full stop and tells Tigh to go and see to the Ariadna's engines. However, it will take more than two centars, they will evacutate and abandon her. Adama then leaves the bridge, saying he has an appointement to keep.
Shortly, Adama is in the office of Docotr Madusa. It is the first time he has sought her council. Adama admits he is afraid that he has become too self-reliant, proud and strong-willed. Madusa answers that everyone has doubts about his or herself at one time or another, but Adama replies he has never had doubts before. He feels he has failed as a commander during the Quantum Storm incident, and has asked for this session with Madusa to conduct a psych evaluation on the senior officers, in order to select his successor.
Apollo is leading Red Flight and is contacting the Ariadna to see how repairs are fairing. Tigh is not optimistic about the ship's chances. After discussing the situation with Apollo, Tigh agrees to begin the evacuation of the 800 people aboard the ship. He still intends to continue repair work for as long as possible. Apollo contacts Athena, who is has operational command on the bridge, and sends the first batch of transfer shuttles to pick up passengers from the Ariadne. Apollo aks where their father is, but all Athena knows is that he is in a private conference. Both of them are surprised and somewhat annoyed by this.
Adama and Madusa review Tigh as a candidate to succeed Adama as Commander, but Adama feels Tigh is too much of a warrior and not enough of a figurehead. Next, Madusa suggests Apollo. Adama admits he always suspected his son would inherit command, but still wonders if it would seem like favoritism. Madus assures him it would not. But she also tells Adama she feels his decision is hasty and misguided, to which Adama disagrees.
Red Flight reports the third transfer flight from the Ariadna is on their way. Suddenly Blue Flight Leader Starbuck reports that his group is under Cylon attack. He is facing a Basestar as well as numerous Raiders, and reports that Hightail has just been killed in action. Starbuck reacts emotionally and turns round to attack the overwhelming Cylon forces. His wingmen, Greenbean and Breena feel they cannot leave him on his own and turn around too, despite Athena telling them not to. When she realizes they are not listening to her, she orders all the crew of the Galactica to Battle Stations, to launch all Vipers and to protect the fleet. In Madusa's office, the Battle Stations alert is heard as well, and she tells Adama he must hurry to the Command Core. Adama refuses, sayhing he is a liability as a leader and must stay out of the way.
