Battlestar Galactica is an proposed television series which was initially planned for NBC's Peacock streaming service. The series is known to have gone through several revisions, at one point being set within the same world as the 2004 series,[1] and at another being twinned with the separate film project.[2] Following a shake-up among the production staff in early 2024 Peacock formally backed down on the series, and it is currently being shopped elsewhere.[3]
Production[]
Work began on the series sometime in 2019 as a flagship series for Peacock, NBCUniversal's streaming service which had been announced at the start of the year. The series was formally announced in September, led by producer Sam Esmail, who met Ron D. Moore for guidance as to how the series would work.[4] Showrunner duties however fell to Executive Producer Michael Lesslie, who had familiarity with drama with military and political themes with The Little Drummer Girl.[1][5] Lesslie did, however, drop out of the project in March 2021 to focus on an adaptation of Margaret Atwood's Maddaddam.[6] This iteration of the show was designed with Streaming in mind, such as having varying episode length appropriate to the story, be it longer or shorter than the standard 42-minutes.[1] It was however intended to be a long-running episodic series in opposition to Netflix's "ten-hour movie" format designed for binge-watching.[1]
By 2023 the series had been rebooted with the arrival of new showrunner Derek Simon. An outline was agreed upon, but work on episode writing was delayed by the WGA strike.[7][8] In July 2024, Peacock formally backed out of the project during a wider reevaluation of the streaming service by NBC.[3]
