Synopsis[]
"Derelict!"[]
The Battlestar Galactica has received a faint deep-space distress signal of Caprican origin. Boomer, Jolly and Cassiopea investigate in a Titan Suttle, with Apollo escorting them in his Viper. They are surprised to find an old Captrican battle cruiser adrift in the middle of nowhere. Suddenly the derelict ship's cannon aims for the Titan shuttle and fires. Apollo manages to manoeuvre out of the way just in time and eventually the cannons sease fire. Boomer decides to investigate the ship, wearing an Armored Bio-Suit to travel from the shuttle to the cruiser.
Boomer blows a hole in the cruiser's side and enters, only to be attacked by hungry space vermin. He manages to fight them off with his laser pistol and reaches the bridge of the ship to find the ghastly remains of it's crew. Only one woman still lives, albeit barely. She tells Boomer to get off this ship of death, and explains that the guns fired because of an automatic defence. The rest of the crew were killed by a plague.
The woman recounts that she and a group of Colonials fled underground during the Cylon attack on Caprica. When the Cylon's bombardments finally ceased, the other survivors had already left Caprica to join the last remaining Battlestar. They managed to find a ship that was still oparational and fled to the stars, hoping to catch up with the fleet. Three weeks into their flight, they discovered that one of the weapons the Cylon's had used against them was a deadly virus, and all the passengers on the battle cruiser were infected. As the humans began to die horribly, the vermin on board mutated into larger, more dangerous creatures. The Colonials made their last stand on the ship's bridge.
Now the woman has no fight left in her and only regrets she'll newver know what became of her family, or her husband, Adama. Boomer is shocked to realize the woman dying in his arms is Adama's wife Ilya. He comforts her by telling her that Adama and his children still live, omitting the fact that Zac had perished. Ilya instructs Boomer to shut down the fusion reactors and destroy the ship, taking the Cylon plague with it. She also insists that he promises her not to tell Adama or the others how she died, but to spare them the pain. Boomer swears he will do as she wishes as she dies in his arms.
Boomer sets the ship to blow up in five centons, then hurries to get out, fighting more of the mutated vermin along the way. He blasts a hatch with his laser pistol and is sucked out into space, where he contacts Jolly to pick him up with the shuttle. The Battle Cruiser explodes and Boomer undergoes emergency decontamination procedures before rejoining Jolly and Cassiopea in the shuttle's cockpit. From his Viper, Apollo tells Boomer to file a report when they return to the Galactica. Boomer swears that there were no survivors on board.
