Synopsis[]
Caprica, 7322: Captain Adama and Tigh from Battlestar Rylon are fighting against Cylon Raiders during the attack on the farming town Umbra on their home planet. Adama mentions that his wife Ila is pregnant with a boy. She wants to call him Zac, but Adama prefers the name Starbuck. Adama is shot down over the Forest of Thorns and has to make an emergency landing. He is attacked by a single Cylon Centurion, but receives help from a young boy who uses a large tree limb against the Cylon. Back aboard the Rylon, a medic tells Adama that the boy is suffering from amnesia and is one of three thousand orphaned Umbran children. Adama gives the boy the name Starbuck and pledges to find him a home. He has also decided to accept his wife's decision in naming their unborn child Zac.
Six Yahrens later (7325), Adama is now a Flight-Major. Young Starbuck visits unexpectedly to ask if Adama will sponsor his application to be a Colonial Pilot. Adama feels the request should come from the boy's adopted father instead. When he returns to his home in Lower Caprica, Starbuck's foster fahter is angry because the boy went behind his back. Outside, Starbuck learns that Adama's eldest son, Apollo has followed him home, feeling that Starbuck was disrespectful to Adama. Apollo challenges Starbuck to a turbocycle race at Mount Colicos. If Starbuck wins, Apollo will try to convince his father to sponsor Starbuck. If Apollo wins, Starbuck will become a farmer. Both boys use every dirty trick they know to get the upper hand, but when Apollo is hit in the head by a rock, Starbuck risks his life to save Apollo. Adama arrives at Mount Colicos with his daughter Athena, who has told him where Apollo had gone. They find Apollo and Starbuck, who have decided to become each other's best friend.
Three Yahrens later (7331), Cadet Starbuck meets his flight instructor, Lieutenant Wyler, in the hanger of Battlestar Pegasus. Wyler introduces Starbuck to Fumerellos and promises to teach him all about drinking, gambling and women as well as how to fly a Viper.
Four Yahrens later (7335), along with Boomer and Jolly, Starbuck has graduated to become a Colonial Warrior. All three are assigned to the Galactica, which Starbuck is convinced to be Apollo's doing. Adama informs Starbuck that Captain Wyler and his patrol were ambushed by Cylon Raiders the day before and that none of them survived. Starbuck leaves the ceremony and enters a gambling den. One of his opponents, McKintosh claims to have a data chip containing data about the attack on Umbra that changed Starbuck's life in 7322. Starbuck wins the chip, but when he attemts to access it on the Galactica, finds it to be corrupted. Lieutenant Apollo arrives and offers to take Starbuck on his first patrol.

Notes[]
- Mount Colicos on Caprica is named after actor John Colicos.
- The Battlestar Rylon on which Adama serves is presumably meant to be the Rycon, which was mentioned in the original series episode Take the Celestra.
- Wyler's quote about a pilot flying only three Vipers in his life is taken from the episode The Young Lords.
- The backgrounds seen in the hangar on the Battlestar Pegasus are those from the re-imagined series instead of the classic TV show.
- Cylons are refered to as "Toasters", a habit from the re-imagined series rather than the classic version.
