Plot[]
The story begins during the Fall of the Twelve Colonies, as a Cylon fleet destroy the Battlestars over Caprica ahead of a massive-scale invasion. Admiral Tanner, who was on Caprica at the time of the attacks, is forced to take over ground defences instead with his staff.
In a flashback to before the first war, Sagittaron is engaging in violent conflict with Caprica. Marines massacre the crew of a Caprican cargo ship in a violent response to the importing of Caprican cargo, seen by nationalists as an attack on their culture.
The younger Ben Tanner watches news of the conflict form his home in Oasis on Caprica. The Tanner household, who are heavily involved in the manufacture of the new AK-series of Robot, discuss the recent events, believing an all-out declaration of war to be imminent, and disparage the Sagittarons as a backwards people who practice human slavery. The Tanners' Robot butler, Isak, notifies the family that Ben's friends have arrived for a Pyramid game has arrived. Ben takes Isak with him for protection to his mother's insistence.
Three months later, tensions between Sagittaron and Caprica continue to decline, and a Sagittaron cargo ship rams into an armed Caprican trade ship. Three days after this, the President of Caprica orders the mobilization of Caprica's military, recruiting in Oasis and Delphi. Ben joins up and enrolls at Caprica's officer candidate school. Greg meanwhile continues in the family business.
Caprica's military begins its assault on Sagittaron space. Though the Sagittaron military is under-equipped, they outnumber the Capricans. The Caprican navy is caught off-guard when they encounter far greater firepower than they expected. Both fleets suffer catastrophic damage and casualties, and only three badly damaged Sagittaron ships are left out of their fleet of twelve. Tanner, now in command of his ship, orders the three ships to be destroyed to prevent being repaired. For this war crime he is promoted to Commander.
After the ceremony, Commander Tanner is asked to meet an Admiral. The Admiral knows of Tanner's relationship with the AK series, and asks that Tanner help construct a military version of the AK series that can crew Caprican ship as a fighting force. At the Tanner Robogenetics Production Facility in Cameronis, hundreds of Robots are orders into the facility to be modified for military service, including new software upgrades removing their inability to kill. The factory comes under attack, and Isak helps Tanner recover the prototype equipment for further use, including a Centurion helmet.
