Commander Barry Garner was a Chief Engineer, and later Commanding Officer of Battlestar Pegasus.
Biography[]
Garner was chief of engineering during the command of Rear Admiral Helena Cain and Commander Jack Fisk. With no Officer Candidate School surviving the Fall of the Twelve Colonies and the loss of its executives, Garner was promoted to Commander by Rear Admiral William Adama as the highest-ranking officer left. As Commander, Garner used his engineering expertise as his philosophy, punishing crewmembers for the slightest of errors to maintain a perfect, disciplined crew.
When two Raptors disappeared on a training mission, Garner turned on his newly assigned CAG, Captain Kara Thrace and revoked her flight status, with his professional relationship with Major Leland Adama, being stained as a result. When Captain Thrace supposed the two Raptors fell into a Cylon trap by jumping to a phony distress call, Garner rejected the theory simply because of who said it. He was forced to acknowledge it, however, when Major Adama brought it up in a call with the Admiral. Garner was given orders to prepare for a Raptor SAR operation but ignored the orders entirely and ordered Pegasus jump to the suspected co-ordinates instead, and had a Marine guard relieve his XO of duty when he tried to place him under arrest.
Pegasus found itself in the Cylon trap and took a nuclear blast from one of three basestars, knocking out the jump drives and causing serious engineering problems. With his replacement chief of engineering under-qualified, Garner was forced to conduct repairs in a breached compartment. Though he was successful, he died from Oxygen deprivation.[1]
