Apollo grew up on Caprica with his sister Athena and younger brother Zac. The three children of Commander Adama and his wife Ila, they entered military service, with the brothers as Viper pilots at a time when the Colonies were losing a thousand yahren conflict with the Cylon Empire. All three would serve together on their father's Battlestar, the Galactica, with Apollo earning the position of Squadron Leader.
Fall of the Twelve Colonies of Man[]
When the Cylons unexpectedly agreed to peace talks following dealings with the colonial ambassador, Count Baltar, all five of the remaining Battlestars in the now severely decimated Colonial Service departed for Cimtar. With great rejoicing over the upcoming talks, Apollo was unable to take off with a full squadron for a routine patrol and instead departed the Galactica with his younger brother, Lieutenant Zac, as his wingman. Their probe took them close to where the expected Cylon route would be, going through a dense cloud of gas. Ships were detected within the gas, determined to be Cylon tankers and freighters, which were fitted with radio jamming equipment. When Apollo noticed hundreds of squadrons of Raiders flying alongside these vessels, the two Warriors took off back to the Galactica intent on warning the fleet of an apparent Cylon trap, unable to warn them from the cloud. Unfortunately, during the retreat, Zac's Viper was damaged and, soon after, destroyed just short of the fleet.[1]
As Apollo escaped the jamming, the fleet became aware of the upcoming attack, but on the treacherous advice of Baltar, it was ordered to be disregarded by President Adar, who was blindly committed to the peace. When the Cylon raiders began their attack, only the Galactica was ready to launch its Vipers for immediate response. Following a briefing with the senior officers, Apollo's findings of tankers instead of base stars suggested that the attack on Cimtar was part of a pincer movement. The Galactica then abandoned its Vipers behind to face the Cylons, while it took off for Caprica.[1]
Finding the Twelve Colonies desolated by orbital bombardment and low-atmosphere Raider strikes, Apollo and Adama took off in his Viper to assess the terrain of Caprica, while the Galactica returned to the fight. Reaching their home, they found no sign of Ila, but gave her up for dead. Soon, the two were confronted by refugees fleeing from a city, angered at the fleet for having seemingly abandoned them all to the Cylons. One woman, a former news reporter named Serina, stopped the crowd from turning violent, wanting only information on the war. The news from both Warriors convinced the people they were doomed. But Adama was able to turn it around, calling for them to send out messagescasrsst ChC coloni,es sthat the survivors would abandon their r home system in search of another world for their mutual protection. Nolong aftere the , Galactica would lead a fleet of 220 civilian ships out from the colonies in search of Earth, a distant colony known only in ancient writings.[1]
The first days of the trip were arduous; with Pluton bombings having contaminated much of the Colonies's food supplies, not enough supplies were shipped to adequately supply the fleet. Apollo was assigned the distribution of rations around the fleet to keep people from dying, and learned, first-hand, the increasingly desperate violence by the starving civilians. He and Lieutenant Boomer would also raid a lavish party held by Sire Uri of the Council of the Twelve. But they were unable to arrest him, and instead, they confiscated the supplies.[1]
The food problems went away when the fleet reached Carillon, which was not only a site of large tylium mining to provide fuel, but also was well stocked on food fit for humans in spite of the resident Ovions's insectoid traits. Under political pressure from the Council Of The Twelve, to whom Sire Uri proposed the idea of awarding the Golden Star Cluster, the Colonial Service's highest military honor, to Apollo, Starbuck, and Boomer for sweeping the Madagon Mine Field screening Carillon, many of the Galactica's Warriors were ordered to disembark and attend the festivities, attended by the three intended honorees. They soon took notice of the fact that most of the people outfitted in Blue Squadron dress uniforms were not even pilots. But they were not aware that this was a plan by Adama to keep the fleet defended should the banquet be a trap. While exploring more of the colony, the three Warriors discovered the truth soon enough: the Ovions were actively luring humans to the planet to consume, and were part of the Cylon Alliance, with a force of Centurions already present. Retreating to their Vipers as the tylium supplies ignited, the two took part in the fighting with Raiders. Remembering what had happened at the Battle of Cimtar, Apollo and Starbuck broke off from Blue Squadron and moved to the far-side of Carillon, where a base star had been waiting for them the entire time. Wisely exaggerating their numbers over radio, the two Warriors tricked the ship's crew into believing that the Galactica, and multiple squadrons, were on their way. As it dropped into Carillon's atmosphere, the tylium exploded, destroying it and the planet.[1]
