An Air Group is a formation of small military spacecraft coordinated by a larger capital ship, usually a battlestar. Its most senior officer has the designation of Commander, Air Group or "CAG".
Structure[]
The Air Group is divided into squadrons, with at least one consisting of Vipers and another of Raptors. The CAG may give out orders from CIC, or take part directly.
If there are twelve Vipers in a Squadron, the designated Squadron Leader (usually a Captain) will lead them in six groups of two, consisting of lead pilots (Lieutenants) and their respective wingmen (Junior Lieutenants or Ensigns). A clear hierarchy is established and adhered to at all times. The CO is in charge of strategy, and will assign missions to the CAG, who himself is responsible for tactical thinking - that is, how to fulfil the CO's orders. The CAG's instructions are then given to the Squadron leaders, who oversee the operation on the field and report problems back to the CAG. If the mission is to destroy a target, lead Ppilots will follow their squadron leader's engagement orders, while their wingmen are responsible for protecting them from enemy fire.[1]
